Agree with your response on 3, ara. In the real world there's no excuse and no "sliding scale" to rate with. Here in fantasy/shipper land where we (read: *I*) would like nothing but happy endings, a little leeway can be had for the sake of the story.

1) NO!! IMHO, Logan should NOT have opened that door, despite what happened later, THAT act WOULD have been simply putting her back into the hands of her attacker.
"Drake’s scent had still been there, a disgusting and ugly reminder of that she didn’t belong to him. He had taken upon the task of getting rid of that mark."
2) Ignoring the negative connotations of one person "belonging" to another; after doing what he did to her, Drake had/has no right to lay any claim to Maire at all!! Especially when she was in no condition to agree or not.
"She had lain under him, warm and glowing, relaxed...." "He had tried to be careful."
3) Depending on POV, it could be said that at least Logan cared for her.
I'm not condoning, I'm not making excuses; merely acknowledging the fact that every person, no matter how noble, sincere, or close to 'perfect' has a price, a breaking point, an end to their rope.
Very powerful, ara, also quite ambiguous, IMO. Bravo!

But... This one probably came to my mind when me and my hubby started discussing about rape, and when a rape is not a rape. Conversation begun when we started remembering all the nutty outcomes of trials for the past years, and how one court had ruled that a rape had been only a mild rape because man hadn't used excessive violence towards the woman he had raped.
*I'm* not condoning. Rape is a rape no matter how gently it is done.

Dear God, for Marie. Practically raped twice, by two different men, on the same day. And yet there's something so inevitable and tragic about the way it plays out. It's not entirely comfortable, how much I understand it.
Oh, Logan. By always expecting the worst of himself, he finds himself giving into it. Because despite all his protestations of what a bad, selfish man he is, how wrong it was to want her, how stark and dark his desires, he knew he'd found something pure and strong in him, for him, too. Her. It was just as much his tragedy that she cried.
